For decades, the Toyota HiLux has earned its place as a trusted workhorse across Australia. From farms to construction sites and everything in between, it has built a reputation on quality, durability and reliability.

Now, it enters a new era.

Toyota has introduced the all-new Toyota HiLux BEV, marking the brand’s first battery electric ute. It’s a significant step forward, bringing together the capability Australians expect from HiLux with the benefits of zero tailpipe emissions.

Built to Handle Australian Conditions

A key consideration for any ute buyer is whether it can handle the realities of Australian driving. Toyota has approached this carefully, subjecting the HiLux BEV to extensive testing in demanding environments, including remote mining sites and high-temperature conditions.

This isn’t a concept vehicle designed for city streets alone. It has been developed and validated in the same kinds of environments where diesel HiLux models have proven themselves for years. For businesses and fleet operators, that level of testing provides confidence that electrification doesn’t come at the expense of durability.

Electric Performance Without Compromise

Under the surface, the HiLux BEV introduces a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system powered by a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery. The result is a driving experience that feels both strong and controlled, with power delivered smoothly across all conditions.

With 144kW and 468Nm available, the vehicle offers the kind of performance expected from a modern ute, while full-time all-wheel drive and selectable terrain modes help maintain traction when conditions change. Importantly, it retains a 2,000kg braked towing capacity¹, ensuring it remains capable for both work and recreation.

Charging and Range in the Real World

One of the biggest shifts with a battery electric ute is how it’s refuelled. The HiLux BEV offers a range of charging options designed to suit different use cases.

Fast charging capability allows the battery to be replenished from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes under ideal conditions², making it practical for drivers on the move. For overnight charging, a three-phase AC setup can fully recharge the battery in approximately six and a half hours².

Driving range for pick-up models is rated at up to 315 kilometres under laboratory testing conditions³. As with any electric vehicle, real-world results will vary depending on factors such as load, terrain, climate and driving style³.

Practicality and Comfort Inside

Inside the cabin, the HiLux BEV maintains a familiar layout while introducing modern technology and comfort features. A large 12.3-inch touchscreen anchors the interior, supported by wireless smartphone connectivity and integrated navigation⁴.

Toyota Safety Sense remains standard, along with connected services that allow owners to monitor and interact with their vehicle remotely through the myToyota Connect app⁵. Higher-grade variants add premium finishes, creating a space that feels equally suited to workdays and weekends.

A New Option in Toyota’s Electrified Line-Up

The HiLux BEV forms part of Toyota’s broader multi-pathway approach to electrification. Rather than moving entirely in one direction, Toyota continues to offer a range of powertrain options, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

For regional communities like Benalla and Mansfield, this approach is particularly relevant. Different driving conditions, distances and infrastructure needs mean that no single solution suits everyone. The HiLux BEV adds another option into the mix, especially for fleets and businesses looking to reduce emissions while maintaining capability.

What This Means for Ute Buyers

The introduction of the HiLux BEV represents a shift in how Australians can think about utes. It brings together familiar capability with a new type of powertrain, offering a quieter and more efficient way to drive without stepping away from what makes a HiLux a HiLux.

For some, it will be an immediate fit. For others, it will be a vehicle to watch as infrastructure and use cases continue to evolve.
